How to calculate it
Multiply bed area by desired depth after converting everything to compatible units, then divide the total volume by bag size.
Worked example
A 20 × 4 ft bed is 80 sq ft. Three inches is 0.25 ft, so it needs 20 cu ft before allowance. With 2 cu ft bags, 10 bags provide the exact volume, or 11 with 10% extra.
Before you order
- Avoid piling mulch against tree trunks or building siding.
- For rock or gravel sold by the tonne, ask the supplier for density rather than assuming mulch weight.
- Irregular beds can be split into multiple simple rectangles and added together.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use it for soil or compost?
Yes, for volume. Settling and compaction can affect the material quantity after installation.
Can I use it for gravel?
For bulk volume, yes. To convert to weight, use the supplier’s actual density.
Why is the bag size adjustable?
Garden products come in many bag sizes by region and retailer.
