How to calculate it
For one uninterrupted straight fence run, divide the total length by panel width and round up. The number of posts is one more than the number of panels.
Worked example
An 80 ft straight run with 8 ft panel spans needs 10 panels and typically 11 posts before any gates or corners.
Before you order
- A run of fences with corners or gates must be broken down into separate segments.
- Confirm post embedment, wind loading, property boundaries, utility locations and local permit rules.
- Panels may need trimming to fit a remainder.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include gates?
No. A gate changes panel spans and post requirements; make separate adjustments.
Does it estimate fencing for uneven ground?
No. Sloped sites may require stepped or racked panels and additional site planning.
Do I need a permit?
Possibly. Fence height, locations and permit requirements differ by municipality.
