How to calculate it
Estimate wall area from perimeter times height, subtract openings, optionally add the ceiling and divide by panel area after adding an allowance for cuts.
Worked example
A 14 × 10 ft room with 8 ft walls has 384 sq ft of gross wall area, before openings. A 140 sq ft ceiling raises the total. A standard 4 × 8 ft panel covers 32 sq ft before offcuts.
Before you order
- Panel count is not a layout plan; orientation and framing spacing matter.
- Fire-rated, moisture-resistant and specialty areas can require different products.
- Budget for compound, tape, fasteners, corner bead, primer and disposal separately.
Frequently asked questions
Are doors and windows deducted?
Yes, using 20 and 15 sq ft planning allowances. Treat unusual openings separately.
Are waste and damage included?
There is an adjustable cutting allowance, but no guarantee that every offcut can be reused.
Can I use this for a ceiling only?
Use the wall fields for overall area as applicable, but the tool is optimized for a rectangular room. For ceiling-only work, use surface area divided by sheet area.
